Who is the Sheriff?

 The Sheriff is an officer of the court and functions as part of the executive arm of the court. He is responsible for serving court processes like summonses and subpoenas. The Sheriff may advise on the various stages in the legal process but may not offer legal advice. The Sheriff is appointed to act within a specific magisterial district or an area within a district. Who regulates the actions of the Sheriff?

The South African Board for Sheriffs (SABFS) monitors the services of the Sheriff and their Deputies to ensure that their actions are carried out in an efficient and humane manner in accordance with the Code of Conduct for Sheriffs.

What matters can the Sheriff assist you with?

The Sheriff may assist with all civil law matters whereby judgments have been made against people who have defaulted on payments of any kind. The Sheriff may also serve documents in matters relating to divorce and family/domestic violence.
